I Have a Toothache
Tooth pain is one of the most common reasons patients call us. It's also one of the most important symptoms not to ignore — even if the pain comes and goes.
What is this condition?
A toothache is pain in or around a tooth. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sharp, throbbing pain that makes it difficult to eat, sleep, or concentrate. Toothaches are almost always a sign that something is wrong and needs professional attention.
Why might I have this?
- Tooth decay (cavities) reaching the inner layers of the tooth
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Infected tooth pulp (abscess)
- A loose or broken filling or crown
- Gum disease causing the gum to pull away from the tooth
- Teeth grinding (bruxism) causing wear and sensitivity
- An impacted or erupting wisdom tooth
What symptoms should I watch for?
- Severe, throbbing pain that doesn't go away
- Pain that wakes you up at night
- Swelling in the jaw, cheek, or gums
- Fever or a bad taste in your mouth (signs of infection)
- Pain when biting or chewing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed

Treatment
Depending on the cause: a filling, crown, root canal, or extraction — whichever resolves the problem and preserves your tooth when possible.
Will it hurt?
We use local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain during treatment. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience is. If you're anxious, let us know — we have options to help you relax.
How long does it take?
An exam and X-rays typically take 30–45 minutes. Treatment time depends on what's needed: a filling takes about an hour; a root canal may take 60–90 minutes over one or two visits.
What happens after treatment?
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed until your appointment
- Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods that trigger pain
- Do not ignore the pain — it will not resolve on its own
- Follow all post-treatment instructions provided at your visit
What happens if I don't treat it?
An untreated toothache almost always gets worse. A cavity becomes a root canal. An abscess can spread to the jaw, neck, or even the brain — a life-threatening emergency. The sooner you come in, the simpler and less expensive the treatment.
