- Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for 24 hours
- Apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling
- Eat soft foods and avoid the surgical area while healing
- Take prescribed medications as directed

What is oral surgery?
Oral surgery refers to surgical procedures performed in the mouth and jaw — including tooth extractions, wisdom tooth removal, bone grafting, and soft tissue procedures. These are performed by a dentist or oral surgeon using local anesthesia.
Why might I need oral surgery?
You may need oral surgery if a tooth is too damaged or infected to save, if wisdom teeth are impacted or causing problems, if you need bone grafting before implants, or if you have a soft tissue condition that requires surgical correction.
What symptoms should I watch for?
Severe tooth pain, swelling in the jaw or face, a tooth that is visibly broken or crumbling, pain from a wisdom tooth pressing on neighboring teeth, or a dentist's recommendation for extraction are all reasons to schedule a surgical consultation.
What happens during oral surgery?
We take X-rays to plan the procedure, administer local anesthesia to numb the area completely, and perform the extraction or surgical procedure. You will feel pressure and movement but no pain. The area is sutured if needed and we provide detailed aftercare instructions.
Will it hurt?
No. Local anesthesia ensures you feel no pain during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, some soreness is normal for 2–3 days. Most patients manage this comfortably with over-the-counter pain relievers. We prescribe stronger medication when needed.
How long does oral surgery take?
A simple extraction takes 20–40 minutes. A surgical extraction or wisdom tooth removal may take 45–60 minutes. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after your procedure.
