We always try to save a natural tooth first. But when a tooth is too damaged, infected, or crowded to keep, extraction is the right choice — and it's more comfortable than you might expect.
What is this condition?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Simple extractions remove teeth that are visible above the gumline. Surgical extractions are needed for teeth that are broken at the gumline, impacted, or have curved roots. Both are performed with local anesthesia so you feel no pain during the procedure.
Why might I have this?
- Severe decay that has destroyed too much of the tooth to restore
- A tooth that is cracked or broken beyond repair
- Advanced gum disease that has destroyed the supporting bone
- An infected tooth that cannot be treated with a root canal
- Overcrowding before orthodontic treatment
- Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or damage to neighboring teeth
What symptoms should I watch for?
- Severe pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relievers
- A tooth that is visibly broken or crumbling
- Swelling, pus, or a bad taste indicating infection
- A tooth that is very loose with no bone support
- Pain from a wisdom tooth pressing against other teeth
What happens during treatment?

Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is administered to completely numb the tooth and surrounding tissue. You will feel pressure but no pain.

Extraction
The tooth is gently loosened and removed. Surgical extractions may require a small incision in the gum.

Will it hurt?
You will not feel pain during the extraction — only pressure and movement. After the anesthesia wears off, some soreness is normal for 2–3 days. Over-the-counter pain relievers manage this well for most patients.
How long does it take?
A simple extraction takes 20–40 minutes. A surgical extraction may take 45–60 minutes. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day.
What happens after treatment?
- Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding
- Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or use a straw for 24 hours
- Apply ice packs in 20-minute intervals for the first day
- Eat soft foods for several days
- Take prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed
- Call us if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or fever
What happens if I don't treat it?
A tooth that needs extraction and doesn't get it will continue to cause pain and infection. The infection can spread to neighboring teeth and the jawbone. An abscessed tooth can become a life-threatening emergency.
